Drama unfolded in the season finale as Tracey suffered devastating heartbreak following a costly first-lap tangle that ruined his chances of securing second place in the standings. The young gun entered the weekend needing to finish ahead of Todd Hazelwood to tick off his vital goal of banking points required for a Motorsport Australia Superlicence, but an early race collision dashed those ambitions entirely.
The incident occurred at Turn 4 on the opening lap when contact was made with the rear of Hazelwood's car, causing the field to stack up dramatically behind them. Nathan Herne spectacularly climbed over the left rear of Tracey's machine, tearing substantial amounts of bodywork from both cars. The door panel from Herne's vehicle flew off on the back straight, forcing the newly crowned champion back to the pits to retire, marking his first DNF of the entire campaign.
Although Herne had already wrapped up the championship crown after Race 1, it was a sour conclusion to his milestone 100th race start in the category. Reflecting on his small family-run operation that expanded to two cars this year, including the entry for Harrison Sellars, Herne shared his pride in the paddock. I do all the mechanical work myself in the shed, and my old man drives the truck for us, he stated.

We are a very small team and we prep two cars, and I feel like we have done a really good job this season, Herne added. To end it that way really sucks to say the least, but at the end of the day it still doesn't take away from what we've done this year. To go up against Todd, who has DJR helping him out on that Trans Am car, and all the other big teams out there, it's really cool.
Looking ahead to his future following an impressive performance with GRM in his Bathurst 1000 debut, potential Supercars opportunities remain on the horizon. Meanwhile, Jack Smith drove valiantly in his Chevrolet Camaro to finish second behind dominant race winner Hazelwood.
