A dramatic first-lap melee completely altered the championship landscape, forcing Todd Hazelwood to accept his second DNF of the season. The reigning champion's title defense now hangs by a thread after a heavy contact wrecked his suspension early in the race.

The intense battle erupted as Todd Hazelwood ran side-by-side with Blake Tracey through Turn 2. The pair made contact through the switchback to Turn 3, triggering a multi-car pile-up in the pack and bringing out the safety car.

The resulting stack-up caught out several drivers behind them. Harrison Sellars was spun off following contact with Tom Davies, while Cody Brewczynski suffered heavy terminal damage that put him out of the race on the spot.
