FIA Pushes for F1 V8 Engines Return Ahead of 2030 Target
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
V8 power has not been seen in F1 since 2013, but FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is keen for them to be back in the sport

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is eager to bring back V8 engines and their iconic exhaust notes one year earlier than originally scheduled to Formula 1. However, securing this accelerated 2030 shift requires crucial backing from participating power unit manufacturers.

Just months after the introduction of the current power unit regulations, discussions regarding the sport's next engine cycle are already in full swing. The existing rules have faced substantial criticism from both drivers and fans alike due to the heavy reliance on complex electrical deployment systems.

Throughout current Grand Prix weekends, drivers have had to significantly adapt their driving styles to manage energy deployment. While this strategic split has generated numerous overtaking maneuvers, critics frequently argue that the overall racing dynamic feels overly artificial.

Following widespread backlash regarding the initial power distribution, the governing body previously agreed to adjust hybrid ratios incrementally. Nevertheless, attention has now shifted firmly toward a potential return to traditional combustion powerplants.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Rwandan Grand Prix announcement, Ben Sulayem emphasized the inevitability of the decision. "It will be agreed, because then there will not be a V8, maybe a V16 if they don’t take a V8, and they know that," he stated regarding manufacturer negotiations.
