Motorsport Director Pit Beirer has openly admitted that the Austrian manufacturer has never had the golden opportunity to design a completely new race machine from a blank sheet of paper since joining MotoGP back in 2017. Throughout their years competing in the premier class, the development of the RC16 has always relied on incremental updates, stacking new parts onto existing concepts rather than engineering a radical engine and chassis package from scratch. Now, with major technical regulations scheduled to shake up the championship in 2027, KTM views this upcoming era as the perfect window to finally close the performance deficit to the front-running pack.
Over its tenure in the premier class, the Mattighofen-based factory has celebrated eight grand prix victories courtesy of standout talents. Miguel Oliveira delivered five of those triumphs, while current Red Bull KTM Factory Racing stalwart Brad Binder claimed two wins alongside a single victory from Pedro Acosta. Despite securing several sprint successes as well, the squad has yet to take that definitive final step toward consistent podium contention at the absolute front, leaving them chasing dominant Italian manufacturers like Ducati and Aprilia.
Pit Beirer pointed out the specific fundamental weakness that continues to hamper the RC16 on track. The main limitation occurs precisely at the moment riders release the brake and attempt to turn the motorcycle toward the apex. Riders frequently report that competing machines instantly track smoothly in the desired direction, whereas the KTM struggles for a crucial moment. This momentary hesitation prevents the bike from picking up the throttle early, resulting in rear tire spin and compromised drive due to an imperfect positioning during acceleration.

Although exceptional rider talent has occasionally compensated for entry-phase shortcomings, the technical squad understands that setup tweaks alone can no longer resolve the underlying mechanical limitations built into the current engine architecture. With the upcoming rules overhaul, engineers will no longer be restricted by carrying over legacy components that limit weight distribution and center of gravity optimization.
Looking ahead, the 2027 season represents a profound clean slate for the factory across all operational fronts. Combining a radically redesigned motorcycle with a revamped rider roster offers a massive opportunity for redemption. As reported by Motorsport.com, Pit Beirer emphasized that having a completely new motorcycle gives them the chance to properly channel a decade of top-tier racing lessons into a true championship contender.
