Ahead of a high-stakes race weekend, the Mercedes Formula 1 team has officially announced that former moon mission astronaut Reid Wiseman has joined the organization as a team ambassador ahead of the United States Grand Prix.
Wiseman served as the commander on the Artemis II mission operated by NASA, which sent astronauts on a historic manned flight around the moon earlier this year. The monumental flight marked the first manned mission around the moon in over 50 years, with the Artemis II crew setting a brand-new record for the furthest human beings had ever traveled from Earth—a milestone previously held by Apollo 13 as part of NASA's ongoing lunar return strategy.
In his new capacity, the former astronaut, US Navy Captain, and Artemis II commander will work closely with stakeholders, commercial partners, internal employees, and VIP guests. His primary objective is to help showcase the intense innovation, rigorous leadership, and high-performance culture that underpins sustained success at the pinnacle of motorsport.

Reflecting on his exciting new role within the F1 paddock, Wiseman shared his perspective on the parallels between elite racing and aerospace exploration. I've always been struck by how much Formula 1 and space exploration have in common, in both worlds, success is never about one individual, it is built by talented teams solving difficult problems and trusting one another under pressure.
He further elaborated on his growing ties with the Brackley-based squad, noting his previous paddock visits over recent seasons. Having spent time with the team, I have seen first-hand the culture and determination that drives its success, and becoming an ambassador feels like a natural next step in a relationship that has become very meaningful to me.
Echoing the enthusiastic sentiment, Mercedes Chief Commercial Officer Richard Sanders praised the unique perspective that the veteran space traveler brings to the garage. Over the past few years, Reid has become a genuine friend of our team, and every conversation leaves you inspired, not just because of where he has been, but because of how he thinks and leads.
Sanders emphasized that human spaceflight and Grand Prix engineering share remarkably similar DNA. Both require brilliant people working together, absolute trust in those around you, and the courage to push into the unknown, what Reid achieved as commander of Artemis II captured the imagination of millions, and we look forward to sharing his insights with our wider community.
