Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Esteban Ocon has made it clear that his continued presence in Formula 1 is driven by one objective only: becoming a world champion. The Frenchman stressed that without a genuine belief in reaching that level, he would no longer be competing at the pinnacle of motorsport.

Entering his 10th full-time Formula 1 season and his second with Haas, Ocon views his current phase as part of a longer-term build rather than a reflection of his ultimate potential. After joining the American team last year, he endured a difficult opening campaign that failed to deliver consistent results.

Ocon’s first season with Haas was compromised by recurring technical issues, most notably persistent brake problems that limited his pace during the latter stages of races. Those difficulties prevented him from extracting the maximum performance from the car and obscured any clear assessment of his true competitiveness over a full season.

Despite never having driven a car capable of fighting for a world title, Ocon remains convinced that his opportunity will come. He pointed to Formula 1 history as evidence that many drivers only reach championship-contending machinery after years of perseverance and strategic career decisions.

“Yeah, otherwise I would not be here. I would not even participate at this stage of my career,” Ocon told international media. “That’s where I want to be in the future.”

He referenced specific moments from earlier in his career to illustrate how quickly fortunes can change in Formula 1. Ocon highlighted the early stages of the 2023 season, where he regularly found himself battling Lando Norris in wheel-to-wheel fights deep into races.

“If you look at 2023, I look at Canada, I look at all the early races in the season,” Ocon said. “I was fighting with Lando three races in a row, last-lap battles for P6, P7. And here he is with a race-winning car.”

That comparison underscores Ocon’s belief that the gap between midfield competitiveness and race-winning performance can be rapidly bridged when circumstances align. For Ocon, the lesson is that remaining competitive and prepared is essential until the right opportunity emerges.

Haas enters the new Formula 1 season under fresh technical regulations, reinforced by a title partnership with Toyota Gazoo Racing. The regulation reset offers potential scope for competitive reshuffling, particularly for teams seeking to reposition themselves within the midfield hierarchy.

While Haas continues to focus on long-term development rather than immediate results, Ocon insists that every decision he makes is aimed at building towards a future title challenge. He rejected the notion that competing solely for lower points-paying positions is a sufficient goal at this stage of his career.

“I think never give up, that’s the honest answer,” Ocon said. “I’m here to fight for that in the future, definitely.”

“Otherwise, why would I train so hard, put in so much effort to be here to fight for P10?” he added. “That’s what we are doing at the moment. This is not really what the dream is all about.”

As Formula 1 moves into a new regulatory era, Ocon recognises that success is often defined by timing as much as talent. With experience, technical resets, and shifting competitive landscapes, he believes the foundations are being laid for a chance to finally compete at the front.

For now, Ocon’s focus remains on building credibility, consistency, and momentum, while maintaining unwavering belief in a future opportunity to fight for the ultimate prize in Formula 1.
