The race weekend at the Lusail International Circuit delivered a fascinating twist for Enea Bastianini, who surprisingly emerged as the top performer for the Austrian manufacturer during the opening sessions of the Qatar Grand Prix. Amidst preparations for his upcoming switch to Trackhouse Racing and Aprilia next season, the Italian rider showcased impressive speed aboard the RC16 machine under the desert lights.
Securing sixth place in the combined timesheets proved that the explosive single-lap potential of the bike was fully unlocked. The rider wearing the number 23 badge managed to outpace his stablemates significantly, finishing less than four tenths of a second behind championship leader Marc Marquez. This strong showing stood in sharp contrast to the struggles faced by factory rider Pedro Acosta, who missed out on a direct Q2 spot, while Brad Binder narrowly scraped through into the top ten.
However, this sudden burst of time-attack speed brought an unexpected dilemma that completely flipped the usual characteristics of the veteran rider. Throughout his premier class career, the smooth-riding Italian has traditionally been known as a Sunday specialist who excels with worn tires over race distance, while frequently battling to extract maximum performance from a single qualifying lap.

"It was terrible, I could not get up to speed at all and felt like I had zero grip on the track," Bastianini explained, describing his initial difficulties during the opening practice session before switching to soft rubber. The real concern, however, lies in his sudden inability to find comfort with the medium compound race tires, reversing his historical strengths completely.
This technical puzzle leaves the Tech3 squad with plenty of homework ahead of the qualifying sessions and the main Grand Prix in Doha. While single-lap pace is certainly a welcomed bonus, solving the race-tire conundrum remains the ultimate key if he wishes to convert his strong grid positioning into a stellar result in the desert.
