Massimo Rivola Slams Stewards Over Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi Clash

The MotoGP paddock is currently buzzing with controversy following the Sprint Race incident between Marc Marquez and Marco Bezzecchi at Lusail. Aprilia Racing CEO Massimo Rivola has publicly criticized the stewards for their failure to penalize the move that ultimately sent the Italian rider into the gravel.

For Rivola, the aftermath of the collision is a significant blow to Bezzecchi’s momentum in the championship. Speaking ahead of the main race, he argued that the stewards failed to correctly identify the primary culprit by neglecting to ask the fundamental question of who had the actual capacity to avoid the incident.

"I feel terrible for what happened to Marco because he deserved to be in a position to fight until the end of the championship, given the speed he has shown all year. Regarding the incident, I made my position clear yesterday and I maintain it today," Rivola stated. "When a collision occurs, stewards must determine who is at fault by analyzing who could have prevented it. Marco clearly could not have avoided it, so logically, it must have been Marc."

Rivola emphasized that Marquez was the one closing in on Bezzecchi rather than the other way around. He expressed frustration that the lack of a penalty meant there was no real recourse for his team, noting that the stewards' process lacks the necessary dialogue with riders during such high-stakes moments in the season. He believes that talking to the participants immediately after the sprint would have led to a more equitable decision.

Technically, Rivola pointed out that Aprilia's strength in mid-corner speed and line selection actually put them in a vulnerable position when an aggressive rider like Marquez challenges from an unfavorable angle. Despite the frustration, the Aprilia boss concluded that the team must now look forward, though he maintains that the incident was entirely preventable had the correct racing judgment been applied.
