Bezzecchi's Emotional Podium at Silverstone: 'An Explosion of Emotions'

Marco Bezzecchi could barely contain his emotions after Saturday's MotoGP sprint at Silverstone. The Aprilia Racing rider finished third despite physical struggles, marking his first podium since a particularly difficult period.

“When I hugged my team, it was a beautiful explosion of emotions,” said Bezzecchi, who started the weekend with serious doubts. A summer injury has left him lacking strength, and he wasn't even sure he could finish the 10-lap sprint.

“Before the start, I was worried. After the adrenaline of the first two laps, the pain and fatigue set in. With four laps to go, I had a big physical drop,” he explained.

Nevertheless, the Italian held on and crossed the line third. He thanked the doctors who aided his recovery, trainer Carlo Casabianca, Valentino Rossi, Francesco Bagnaia, fellow VR46 Academy riders, and his family and friends.

“There have been fantastic people around me. I want to thank them all,” he said.

Doubts had emerged after qualifying, where Bezzecchi felt even worse. “Qualifying broke me. I couldn't do what I wanted on the bike because I lacked strength. I didn't even know if I could ride the sprint.” He decided to try anyway, managing not only his physical condition but also unexpected rear tire degradation.

“In practice, the drop was never that big, but I had never done more than five consecutive laps. So I didn't really know what to expect and went in a bit blind,” he admitted.

With Sunday's full-length race ahead, concerns remain. The sprint was already a tough physical test, but the grand prix is much longer. “I'm quite worried about tomorrow. My goal is to finish. In the sprint, I dropped in the last two or three laps. I hope the pace is a bit lower. Maybe I'll go to Jorge and ask him to ride slower in the early laps,” he joked, referring to teammate Jorge Martin.

His pain is mainly on the left side, with reduced strength in his upper body and left leg, plus a strange feeling in his foot when downshifting. “Everything on the left side hurts. I have little strength in my upper body because I could barely train. Same for my leg. I feel the right side now too because I compensate with it, but that side is better.”

For Sunday, Bezzecchi plans to race with the medium rear tire, hoping it helps in the second half. “I hope so with all my heart. I tried the medium and it felt okay. Maybe it will help, though probably only for a few laps.”

Despite all the pain, the podium meant a lot. Asked if it felt almost like a win, he laughed. “A win remains a win. But I got very emotional today. It was beautiful.”
