Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Daniel Ricciardo has outlined a pragmatic approach to retirement from Formula 1, stressing the importance of removing ego and “fairytales” when making career-defining decisions.

The Australian’s F1 journey came to an end following a difficult period after his departure from McLaren at the conclusion of the 2022 season. He returned to the Red Bull Racing environment in 2023 as a reserve driver before stepping in at AlphaTauri, replacing Nyck de Vries mid-season.

Ricciardo aimed to rebuild his position and potentially earn a return to Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen. However, his performances did not secure that pathway, and he was ultimately replaced by Liam Lawson following the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, marking his final appearance in the championship.

Reflecting on his decision-making process, Ricciardo emphasized the necessity of honest self-assessment, independent of external encouragement or emotional influence.

“It is easier said than done, but remove any fairytales, remove your ego as much as possible,” he said on the Drive podcast with Ford CEO Jim Farley.

“There are people who love you and will tell you that you’re still great, but you need to close the door and make the decision on your own, being completely honest with yourself.”

He acknowledged that in the final phase of his career, achieving competitive results required significantly greater effort, indicating a natural decline relative to the demands of Formula 1’s performance level.

“If I had continued to the end of that last year, I would still have had the same conversation with myself, because I knew it was becoming harder, and I had to dig very deep to produce results I was proud of,” Ricciardo explained.

Ricciardo also highlighted that while teams and close circles may offer support, they cannot fully understand the internal pressures experienced by a driver inside the cockpit. This makes personal reflection a critical component in determining whether to continue competing.

“You want to believe that everyone is looking out for you, and they probably are, but they don’t know what it’s like to be you in that situation,” he added.

The eight-time grand prix winner underlined the importance of creating space for independent thinking, away from external noise, to reach clarity in such decisions.

“Give yourself enough time alone to find the answer. If you do that, you will get it. I spent a lot of time reflecting on my career and making peace with it,” he concluded.

Ricciardo’s perspective underscores the reality of Formula 1’s competitive environment, where longevity is ultimately dictated by performance sustainability rather than past achievements. His decision reflects a measured and professional conclusion to a career defined by both success and the increasing demands of modern Formula 1.
