BMW Motorrad has finally opened the door to production for the R20, the most spectacular Big Boxer concept motorcycle in the German manufacturer's history. This step was revealed in the first episode of BMW's official documentary series, featuring the CEO of the motorcycle division, Markus Flasch, testing the prototype.

The R20 first captured global attention when it debuted at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in late 2024. Its muscular silhouette blends super naked style with a grand cruiser aura, making it a magnet for custom enthusiasts and devoted BMW fans.

Key Changes Toward Homologation

The first episode confirmed that the R20's testing phase is already very mature. Significant revisions have been made, especially to the exhaust and intake systems that were initially impossible to meet modern noise and emission regulations.

The original concept's free-flowing exhaust with megaphone silencers has been replaced by a suspended design integrating a catalytic converter. Meanwhile, the iconic open-air intake trumpets are gone, replaced by an airbox hidden beneath the floating single seat.

Production Touches Without Losing Soul

The chassis also reflects the transition toward production. The six-piston front brake calipers that wowed at Villa d'Este have been swapped for more conventional four-piston units bearing the BMW emblem, a sign that these will be the final components.

Fortunately, these changes do not detract from the R20's aesthetics. The dramatic rear swingarm remains intact with minimal structural reinforcement. The long wheelbase and large fuel tank still define the R20's distinctive character.

Markus Flasch's statements in the video underscore that this project is nearing the production stage. BMW's technical team has managed to maximize the Big Boxer's torque with an intoxicating sound character, promising a riding experience never seen before.
