Marc Marquez clinched a crucial victory in the 2026 Australian Grand Prix Sprint race at Phillip Island on Saturday, capitalizing on a dramatic late crash that befitted championship leader Jorge Martin during a race briefly affected by light drizzle.
The championship battle intensified dramatically following the incident at Turn 4 with just four laps remaining. Jorge Martin, riding the Aprilia, lost front-end grip while under relentless pressure from Marc Marquez, resulting in a high-speed crash that required the Spaniard to be evacuated by ambulance to the medical center for further checks.
Tyre strategies had earlier dominated the pre-race grid discussions as the field faced cold temperatures and rain spots. While most riders opted for hard front and soft rear combinations, Johann Zarco rolled the dice with a medium front tyre. As the lights went out, Marc Marquez successfully defended his pole position, while Jorge Martin executed a brilliant start from fourth to second.

The fight at the front was fierce, featuring aggressive overtaking maneuvers throughout the first half of the distance. Jorge Martin managed to snatch the lead on multiple occasions at Turn 1 and the Lukey Heights section, only to run wide repeatedly and hand the initiative right back to his rival.
With the championship leader out of contention, Alex Marquez claimed second place to seal a family double podium for the Marquez household. Meanwhile, Fabio Di Giannantonio secured an impressive third position following a hard-fought battle against Marco Bezzecchi and Pedro Acosta, shaking up the world championship standings ahead of Sunday's main event.
