Pascal Wehrlein secured pole position for the opening race of the 2026 Shanghai E-Prix after defeating championship leader Mitch Evans in the final duel. The Porsche driver had been the benchmark throughout qualifying at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Wehrlein posted a 1:09.260 in the final and finished 0.203 seconds clear of Evans. The three points awarded for pole were significant, reducing his deficit to Evans to 24 points in the 2026 Formula E title fight.
The final duel remained close until the last sector. Wehrlein held only a 0.013-second advantage entering the final corner before Evans struggled to rotate the car, allowing the Porsche driver to secure pole by two tenths.

Wehrlein’s route to the final underlined his consistency across the knockout phase. He first defeated Dan Ticktum in the quarter-finals before beating DS Penske driver Maximilian Gunther in the semi-finals to reach the pole shootout.
Evans also produced a controlled qualifying run before the final. The Formula E championship leader comfortably beat Jean-Eric Vergne in the quarter-finals, then defeated Jake Dennis in the semi-finals to set up the direct contest with Wehrlein.
Dennis continued his strong form after Sanya by qualifying third for Andretti. Gunther completed the top four, while the other quarter-final duels saw Dennis beat Sebastien Buemi and Gunther defeat Antonio Felix da Costa.
The group stage produced major setbacks for title contenders. Oliver Rowland and Edoardo Mortara, Evans’ two closest rivals in the standings, were both eliminated early and will start towards the rear of the grid.
Qualifying was held in dry conditions despite the weekend schedule being brought forward by three hours because of adverse weather forecasts for Saturday and Sunday. That forced teams and drivers to adapt to an earlier session window, but it did not reduce the intensity of the on-track contest.
The result gives Wehrlein important momentum in the championship battle, particularly because he cut directly into Evans’ points advantage before the first race of the Shanghai double-header. Evans still starts from the front row, however, meaning energy management, attack-mode timing and launch execution will be decisive factors in the race.
