Oliver Solberg moved into the overall lead of Rally Portugal 2026 after delivering a standout performance on the rain-hit Paredes special stage. The Swedish driver capitalized on the difficult conditions to set the benchmark time and put pressure on the leading contenders in the overall classification.
Sébastien Ogier, who had led the rally for Toyota Gazoo Racing, dropped to second overall after losing 19.1 seconds to Solberg on the stage. Despite the setback, the gap between the pair remains extremely close, with Solberg holding only a 0.5-second advantage heading into the afternoon loop.
Ogier admitted he was surprised by the scale of the time loss, especially as he believed he was already driving at the limit of available grip throughout much of the stage. The wet conditions significantly reduced traction levels, while Portugal’s slippery surface further complicated braking stability and corner entry performance.

“Honestly, I do not really understand what happened. I felt like the grip was already at the limit in many places, so I do not know how I could have driven much better,” said Ogier.
The French driver also acknowledged that his conservative approach during the morning stages contributed to the deficit. In wet conditions, aggressive braking points and higher corner commitment can become decisive factors in maintaining stage pace, and Ogier admitted he was too cautious as grip levels deteriorated.
“My approach was never based on taking maximum risks. In these conditions, I know taking risks can make a difference, but I really did not expect such a big gap,” he added.
Rain is expected to continue throughout the afternoon stages, and Ogier indicated that setup adjustments will be required to improve the car’s performance on wet surfaces. Adapting grip balance, tyre strategy, and vehicle stability is expected to become a key focus for Toyota before the next stages begin.
“We knew the package this morning was not the best one. But I also have to accept that I need to take a few more risks with my driving. I was not taking enough risks this morning when the conditions became difficult,” Ogier explained.
Meanwhile, Thierry Neuville of Hyundai Motorsport closed the gap to the leaders and now sits third overall, only 2.6 seconds behind Solberg. The Belgian driver felt the wet conditions worked in Hyundai’s favor as several rivals struggled to find consistent grip levels.
Neuville also highlighted tyre strategy as a major factor behind his improved pace. He was among the few drivers to use fresh tyres during the morning loop after anticipating heavier rain overnight and early in the day. Although the strategy initially appeared too aggressive for the opening stages, it ultimately helped Hyundai maintain competitive performance in the changing conditions.
“If you look at the times, we started the morning almost four seconds behind the leader, and now the gap is only around two seconds. So we practically cut the deficit in half,” Neuville said.
The battle for victory has now intensified, with the top three drivers separated by only a few seconds. Unstable weather conditions are expected to continue playing a decisive role in the outcome of Rally Portugal, particularly as grip management and tyre strategy become critical performance factors across the remaining stages.
