Yamaha Motoxracing Retains Lineup for 2027 as MGM Optical Express Exits WorldSBK

As the final pieces of the 2027 WorldSBK grid begin to fall into place, important updates continue to shape the premier production-based motorcycle racing championship. Amid ongoing preparations across the paddock, Yamaha Motoxracing has officially confirmed its rider lineup for the upcoming season, locking in both Mattia Rato and Twan Smits for a full-time campaign.

The decision to maintain this pairing comes after the two riders shared the garage during the final three rounds of the previous championship, stepping in following an injury to Bahattin Sofuoglu. Team principal Sandro Carusi emphasized that maintaining continuity within the squad and building upon the established synergy were decisive factors in planning for a more competitive 2027 campaign.

According to Sandro Carusi, the steady progression shown by Mattia Rato throughout his maiden year in the Superbike class helped foster a strong bond with the entire technical crew. Meanwhile, Twan Smits made an immediate impact during his brief stint at the end of the season, convincing the management team of his professional approach and potential over a full 2027 calendar.

Technical updates provided by the manufacturer serve as an added vote of confidence for the squad as they aim to elevate their overall performance and maximize results on track. Sandro Carusi also expressed gratitude to Yamaha Germany for facilitating the arrangement and backing the project to bring Twan Smits into the team alongside loyal sponsors and partners.

However, while one outfit solidifies its structure for the future, another well-known name is stepping away from the paddock as MGM Optical Express Racing officially announces its departure from WorldSBK after six years of competition. The German-based team concludes a notable chapter that began with their debut in 2020, followed by stints utilizing different machinery up to their final seasons with Ducati.

Team principal Michael Galinski reflected on the emotional final weekend with Loris Baz and the strong performances delivered earlier in the year by Tarran MacKenzie, who consistently fought inside the top ten. Galinski noted the immense dedication and financial commitment required to transition successfully from regional racing to the world championship stage, expressing heartfelt gratitude to all fans and supporters.
