Kimi Antonelli's triumphant victory at the Italian Grand Prix not only sent the grandstands into a frenzy but also drew awe from his own boss, Toto Wolff. The Mercedes team principal admitted that the 20-year-old's development has been so rapid that he compares him to an 'AI agent' that continuously learns and improves.
Antonelli delivered a commanding performance in front of his home crowd. Starting from 19th on the grid after an engine penalty, he sliced through the field to take the chequered flag—a near-flawless execution. This win underscored how much smoother his second F1 season has been compared to his turbulent debut in 2025.
Last year, Antonelli struggled with consistency, enduring a mid-season slump where he went nine races without scoring points. "Spa was terrible for him and he was feeling down," Wolff recalled. "Monza was the point where I for the first time said to him, 'listen, you've got to wake up here'. But never doubting. That's why we gave him the opportunity."
After the winter break, everything changed. F1 entered a new regulatory era, and Mercedes transformed from a team scraping for podiums to a title contender once again. Along with the car's improved performance, Antonelli also made a significant leap. He now leads the championship standings, 66 points ahead of teammate George Russell—a position that even surprised Wolff.
"He came out after the winter, out of the blocks in a way that no one saw coming," Wolff said. "The ability, how he processed last year. He's been at all the races. He's seen the pressure of the media, the attention that he gets. It's in a way that the system has been processed and saved. And that's why [he's had] the results that we've seen afterwards."
Wolff added, "But it is still surprising and amazing to see how quickly he develops. For me, it's like an AI agent that continuously self-improves and learns. That's the speed. Also his age is for sure beneficial. The ability cognitively, intellectually to constantly become better."
Despite the praise, Antonelli remains grounded, aware that there is still much to learn and a long season ahead. But if his Monza performance is any indication of what's to come, it's safe to say Mercedes has found a true gem.
