Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Jacques Villeneuve believes George Russell had already lost confidence when he came under pressure from Kimi Antonelli during the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Russell started from pole position and ultimately finished second, but lost a place to his team-mate before Antonelli retired with an electrical problem four laps from the finish.

Villeneuve’s assessment focused on the period when the two Mercedes drivers were competing behind Lewis Hamilton. Russell produced a strong opening stint but could not retain control of the race after Ferrari moved Hamilton onto a three-stop strategy. That shift forced Mercedes to react earlier and left Russell managing his tyres while also defending from Antonelli.

“It was obvious that Russell was being hunted and was done. He wasn’t in the same fight or the same game anymore,” Villeneuve told Sky Sports F1.

Villeneuve specifically highlighted Russell’s defensive response when Antonelli launched his attack. According to the 1997 Formula 1 world champion, Russell moved towards the inside too late and did not show full commitment when attempting to cover the line. Villeneuve interpreted that reaction as evidence that Russell had accepted Antonelli’s advantage before the overtaking manoeuvre had been completed.

“When you look at the overtaking move, Russell went to the inside a little bit too late. It was a half-hearted move, which was really strange. It looked like mentally he was already beaten, even before Antonelli overtook him,” Villeneuve said.

The race nevertheless offered a broader technical explanation than the driver’s psychological state alone. Russell experienced greater tyre degradation after Mercedes adapted its strategy to Hamilton’s threat, while Antonelli’s stint sequence gave him stronger grip during the closing phase. When two fundamentally similar cars are operating on tyres in different conditions, the driver with the more favourable temperature and tyre age can build substantial momentum into a braking zone.

Antonelli also demonstrated a significant improvement compared with his rookie campaign. The Italian arrived in Barcelona after winning five consecutive Grands Prix and holding a 66-point championship lead. Despite missing first practice when his car was allocated to a rookie driver, he qualified third and was able to pressure Russell as the race entered its decisive phase.

Russell had previously topped final practice and secured pole position by more than three tenths of a second over Antonelli. That single-lap speed showed the British driver had not lost his ability to outperform his team-mate. His difficulty emerged when the race conditions changed through severe degradation, Hamilton’s strategy and Mercedes’ need to divide its approach between two cars still capable of reaching the podium.

Villeneuve believes Antonelli’s development has now altered the internal hierarchy at Mercedes. He suggested Russell has reached a plateau while Antonelli continues to improve his speed and consistency. That remains Villeneuve’s interpretation, but the early-season results demonstrate that Antonelli has become a direct competitive threat after a less consistent rookie year.

“When you look at the Mercedes team, the force to be reckoned with right now is Antonelli. Russell looks like he has plateaued, and he is feeling the pressure from the young kid who has come in,” Villeneuve said.

Villeneuve also questioned Russell’s previous support for Mercedes retaining Antonelli as his team-mate. He suggested Russell may initially have expected the younger driver to be easier to control in an internal contest. There is no official evidence that Russell supported Antonelli because he considered him an easy opponent, meaning that part of the argument remains Villeneuve’s opinion regarding the team’s internal dynamic.

The Barcelona result still benefited Russell in championship terms because Antonelli’s technical retirement promoted him back to second place. Antonelli retained the standings lead with 156 points, Hamilton moved to second with 115 and Russell remained third on 106. Russell therefore reduced the gap to his team-mate, but a 50-point deficit after seven rounds still represents a substantial obstacle in the title contest.

For Mercedes, the central issue is not determining which driver is mentally stronger, but managing an internal rivalry without compromising team strategy. Barcelona showed that Antonelli can now challenge Russell on race pace, while Russell still possesses qualifying performance capable of providing a platform for recovery. The Austrian Grand Prix will test whether Russell can convert his Barcelona pole into a more complete race performance and begin reducing Antonelli’s advantage through results on track.
