Chinese manufacturer ZXMoto is once again making waves in the automotive world. After establishing itself with various high-performance models, the company is now working on an ambitious project: a V5 engine rumored to produce over 210 horsepower. If realized, this engine could become the heart of a new-generation superbike ready to challenge the dominance of established giants.
The news first surfaced from a statement by founder Zhang Xue, who shared progress on the project via social media. Although still in early development, ZXMoto is reportedly not just aiming for a prototype. They are seriously considering taking the V5 to the racetrack, with a potential debut in 2028.
Unfortunately, technical details remain shrouded in mystery. There is no official confirmation regarding displacement, peak power, dimensions, or internal architecture. However, speculation among enthusiasts suggests the engine could have a capacity close to 1,100 cc and produce over 210 hp. Of course, these figures are still rumors and need further verification from the manufacturer.
Why V5? More Than Just Power
On paper, a five-cylinder configuration does sound unusual. Most major manufacturers currently rely on two, three, four, or V4 engines. Even modern four-cylinder engines can easily produce over 200 hp. So, what is ZXMoto's rationale for taking this unconventional path?
The answer may not be merely chasing power figures. Adding an extra cylinder opens up opportunities to explore different engine characteristics, such as firing order, power delivery, balance, and vibration. This could be ZXMoto's way of creating a unique performance identity, similar to what Honda has done with its V4 engine in MotoGP.
However, the project is not without challenges. A V5 engine would require more components, a more complex crankshaft, and intricate solutions for cooling, intake, exhaust, and valvetrain. This is a significant undertaking for ZXMoto's engineers, but if successful, the result could be a major leap for the Chinese manufacturer on the global stage.
It will be interesting to see how this project develops. Will ZXMoto actually launch a V5 superbike capable of competing with Ducati or Aprilia? Or is this merely an engineering exercise?
