The WorldSBK calendar is reportedly set for a major shake-up in 2027. Two new circuits are expected to join, while two existing venues will be dropped. This is more than a schedule tweak; it could reshape the competitive landscape of the world superbike championship.
According to reports, Hungary and Jerez are confirmed to leave. Jerez must undergo a major rebuild of its pit complex to keep hosting MotoGP, putting its WorldSBK round at risk. Losing these two venues would leave only ten rounds, but broadcast contracts require a minimum of twelve per season.
Two Surprise Replacement Candidates
One potential replacement is the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia. This venue, synonymous with MotoGP season finales, last hosted WorldSBK in 2010. That year, Cal Crutchlow took pole, while race wins were split between Leon Haslam and Noriyuki Haga. Valencia could directly replace Jerez in October, maintaining an Iberian double-header with Estoril.
Beyond Valencia, China is emerging as a strong candidate to expand WorldSBK's reach beyond Europe. Shanghai International Circuit appears the most obvious choice as it is the only circuit in China with the necessary safety certification. However, reports from Motosprint suggest two alternatives: Chengdu and Ningbo.
Ningbo and the Global Expansion Gamble
Among the two options, Ningbo International Circuit is reportedly the preferred venue. With a 4.015km layout, the track is no stranger to international sport. If a Chinese round materializes in 2027, it would mark the first time a circuit racing world championship visits China since MotoGP at Shanghai in 2008.
This move comes amid rising Chinese interest in world championship motorcycle racing. Currently, three Chinese manufacturers compete in WorldSBK: Kove, ZXMoto, and QJ Motor. CFMoto is also rumored to be preparing a Superbike entry. Adding China to the calendar would undoubtedly boost the championship's popularity and commercial appeal.
A final decision is still pending negotiations, but this expansion signals WorldSBK's ambition to tap into new markets. With Valencia poised for a return and Ningbo on the horizon, the 2027 calendar could be one of the most anticipated in the series' history.
