US GP 2026: Oscar Piastri Slams COTA Turn 1 Bumps Like Motocross Jump

McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has likened a severe track bump on the approach to Turn 1 at the Circuit of the Americas to a motocross jump following a challenging qualifying session for the 2026 United States Grand Prix. The young Australian talent secured a seventh-place start on the grid, finishing 0.768 seconds adrift of polesitter and championship leader Kimi Antonelli, while his papaya teammate Lando Norris encountered misfortune in Q3.

The condition of the asphalt at the Austin venue has sparked intense paddock debate throughout the weekend. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen earlier described the aggressive bumps as completely unacceptable. While acknowledging that general resurfacing efforts improved most parts of the circuit compared to previous years, McLaren's charger pointed directly to the braking zones of Turns 1 and 19 as major hazards requiring immediate attention from circuit management.

"The majority of the track is probably better than what it has been in previous years," Piastri explained when detailing the track surface conditions. "लेकिन द bump into Turn 1 is a bit like a motocross jump. And the one into Turn 19 is not that much better. So, in qualifying it's not too bad because you brake after the bump. But in the race tomorrow, you're braking right on that bump. Especially if you're overtaking someone into Turn 1."

The 25-year-old added that competitors have actively raised safety concerns with the FIA over the weekend. He confirmed that governing officials are fully aware of the persistent asphalt issues and expressed confidence that necessary corrective measures will be implemented ahead of the 2026 championship return.

Addressing media inquiries regarding the striking new hospitality building overlooking Turn 1 featuring spectator cable cars, Piastri admitted it initially caught his attention visually. However, he emphasized that it ultimately failed to alter his driving reference points while adding a vibrant atmosphere to the overall Grand Prix weekend spectacle.
