The fierce midfield battle in Formula 1 delivered another tactical twist at the United States Grand Prix, where Liam Lawson made the calculated decision to sit out the final session of qualifying. The New Zealander successfully secured his ninth Q3 appearance of the season, yet opted against setting a timed lap despite having two fresh sets of Pirelli tyres at his disposal.
This strategic gamble was executed with Sunday's Grand Prix firmly in mind, particularly to protect the broader race interests of the Racing Bulls team. His teammate, Arvid Lindblad, faced an inevitable engine-related grid penalty for the main race despite also advancing into the top-ten shootout.
Explaining the rationale behind the bold move to F1 TV, Lawson revealed, "We decided that if we got both cars into Q3 that considering Arvid has a penalty for tomorrow, that we wouldn't run."

He further elaborated that pushing for absolute grid positions against superior machinery offered little practical reward. "Because even if we outqualified one of the top guys, we're not really fighting them in the race tomorrow. So it just makes sense to do this," Lawson added.
Lawson's path to the final qualifying segment was remarkably tense, as he narrowly secured his spot in Q3 with a flying final lap in Q2. That decisive effort ultimately eliminated Alpine's Pierre Gasly by a minuscule margin of just 0.022 seconds.
Having successfully navigated through Q1 while saving valuable rubber by using only one set of tyres, the Kiwi driver admitted to a brief pang of disappointment at not being able to maximize his final grid potential.
"It's a shame. I managed to get through Q1 on one set [of tyres] and we had two new sets for Q3," he admitted, reflecting on the lost opportunity to chase a higher grid slot.
"So I was ready to have a proper go at it. But unfortunately, or fortunately now, we have plenty of tyres for tomorrow," Lawson noted regarding the tactical upside.
On the other side of the garage, Arvid Lindblad delivered an impressive performance to qualify in ninth position, marking his 12th Q3 appearance of the campaign. However, the British rookie will drop five places down the starting order after taking his sixth internal combustion engine of the year, exceeding the permitted season allocation of four units.
This latest setback follows a similar engine change penalty incurred earlier in the season during the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia, which had also forced the young charger to start from the back of the grid.
Despite outqualifying his teammate, Lindblad candidly acknowledged that Lawson had held a performance advantage for the majority of the track sessions throughout the weekend.
"It wasn't easy at all. I was slower than Liam basically all week. P1, P2, P3," Lindblad stated regarding his early struggles.
"But when it mattered we put it all together. Did a really good lap. Chipped away well. So I'm very happy with everyone on my side of the garage," he added.
This qualifying outcome carries immense importance for Racing Bulls as the Faenza-based squad continues its intense championship fight against Alpine for fifth place in the constructors' standings.
Pierre Gasly secured 11th on the grid, positioning himself directly behind Lawson, while Franco Colapinto qualified 15th—though the Argentine driver is also slated to receive a 10-place grid drop for exceeding his control electronics allocation.
Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto joins the list of drivers facing severe grid penalties, with extensive power unit changes forcing the rookie to start from the very back of the pack.
With a shuffled starting grid all but guaranteed to shake up the race dynamics, Lawson anticipated another fierce wheel-to-wheel battle with their French rivals, maintaining full confidence in Racing Bulls' long-run race pace.
"We just need to drive a good race tomorrow. Obviously we start just in front of them. I think Pierre will be next to me. So I'm sure it's going to be very very close," Lawson said.
"They've been very strong. But I think we had a good long run on Friday. So we'll see tomorrow," he concluded.
