Max Verstappen Explains Why He Refused to Smile After Securing P2 in 2026 US GP Qualifying

Max Verstappen made it clear that he had no intention of celebrating after missing out on pole position and settling for second place behind Kimi Antonelli during qualifying for the United States Grand Prix. The leading Red Bull Racing driver admitted there was simply no need to smile and be super happy following a frustrating lack of grip in the decisive Q3 session.

The reigning world champion had previously looked extremely strong during the opening phases, showing blistering pace on used tires through Q1 and Q2. However, everything shifted dramatically when the final pole shootout commenced at the Circuit of the Americas, leaving him 0.179 seconds adrift of the young Italian prodigy while narrowly beating his teammate by a tiny margin.

According to Motorsport.com, the Dutch ace detailed the specific handling issues that plagued his final runs. He noted that he could not lean on the rear end of his car through the crucial final sector of the lap, which ultimately cost him too much valuable time when it mattered most.

Addressing potential excuses regarding swirling track winds, he refused to blame the elements entirely for his struggles during the initial Q3 runs. Although acknowledging that wind influenced the second set of flying laps, the fundamental problem remained an unexpected failure of the fresh rubber to deliver the anticipated performance level.

Engineers now face a race against time to understand why the car offered superior feedback on worn tires compared to brand-new sets.
