The dramatic conclusion to the 2026 Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama delivered a heartbreaking blow to Anton De Pasquale and Team 18. A near-certain victory evaporated in an instant when the leading car ran completely out of fuel on the very final lap of the grueling endurance classic.

The intense battle for supremacy ultimately boiled down to a crucial strategic phase during the final round of pit stops. De Pasquale emerged as the first front-runner to duck into the lane on Lap 138, holding a slender half-second advantage over his pursuer. The tactical gamble yielded a remarkably swift in-to-out time, handing Adrian Burgess's squad a commanding margin.

Optimism radiated through the Team 18 garage as the leadership group confidently anticipated securing the coveted Peter Brock Trophy. The mood shifted rapidly, however, when internal telemetry calculations revealed an alarming fuel deficit that threatened to derail their entire afternoon. Urgent radio messages immediately echoed through the cockpit, demanding desperate fuel-saving measures.

The situation escalated further when a late Safety Car was deployed following a heavy crash involving Chaz Mostert's Walkinshaw TWG Racing entry, wiping out the substantial gap De Pasquale had carefully built. Despite frantic attempts to nurse the machine home, the deficit proved insurmountable as the checkered flag loomed.

De Pasquale coasted to a halt at The Chase after his powerplant sputtered and died on Mountain Straight, handing a surprise repeat victory to Brodie Kostecki and Todd Hazelwood at Dick Johnson Racing. Reflecting on the crushing disappointment, De Pasquale admitted the harsh reality to Fox Sports. "By the time we obviously got it worked out, we were done," he stated. "Everything went our way until it didn’t. The chequered flag was six kays away, really disappointing.">
