Toto Wolff Admits Mercedes Cost George Russell Pole at Brazilian GP

Frustration boiled over inside the Mercedes garage following a dramatic qualifying session at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos. George Russell put on a masterclass display of speed throughout the Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix sessions, yet a crucial tactical miscalculation from the pit wall ultimately robbed him of a shot at securing the ultimate grid spot in treacherous wet conditions.

The turning point arrived during George Russell's initial flying lap in Q3. As the British driver approached the third sector of the circuit, he encountered traffic from Alex Albon's Williams. Seeing their driver closing in on slower cars, the pit wall immediately advised him to abort the lap and create a gap to push properly on the following attempt.

Unfortunately, that subsequent lap never materialized as weather conditions worsened rapidly, plunging the circuit into heavier rain and making any further improvements impossible for the entire field. The botched strategy sparked a heated radio exchange between the driver and team management as the #63 car returned to a quiet pitlane.

Addressing the media after the session concluded, Toto Wolff openly admitted the team's error in judgment. The Austrian team boss explained that making split-second tactical calls under such volatile weather remains an extreme gamble without knowing what lies ahead.

"Having a crystal ball to know in advance whether it was better to finish the lap or slow down and take space would have helped us a lot. In reality it was a difficult decision, it was a fifty-fifty call because George was about to catch Albon," stated Toto Wolff.

Despite carrying a grid penalty into the weekend's main race that already compromised his starting position, George Russell's relentless pace earned high praise from his team principal, who emphasized that his driver operated on an entirely different level throughout the afternoon.

"At that moment he was still eighteen milliseconds faster than Lando Norris' time and I don't know if that was enough to take pole position. In any case George drove in a perfect manner throughout the session and I believe he deserved the first position because of the way he drove, he was in a league of his own compared to everyone else," concluded Toto Wolff.
