Stella Doubts Mercedes Claim of No Funds for F1 2026 Upgrades

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has cast doubt on Toto Wolff's claim that Mercedes lacks the budget to fast-track car upgrades in F1 2026. Stella believes the Brackley squad could use a special cost cap allowance to stay competitive despite its rivals' rapid progress.

In recent weeks, Ferrari and especially McLaren have brought major upgrades, each taking two wins and putting pressure on Mercedes, which has only introduced minimal aero parts. Mercedes plans a bigger package for October's Bahrain Grand Prix, but that delay could cost points in Italy, Spain, and Azerbaijan.

Wolff argued that Mercedes cannot spend more due to the $215 million cost cap, saying, "We haven't got the money to put developments on the car." However, Stella pointed out that all teams receive an extra $3 million allowance to prepare for 2027 engine regulations, which could be used in 2026 or 2027.

"I would like to believe you, but I actually don't believe you," Stella told Autosport. He added that Mercedes likely has significant development in the pipeline, saying, "I'm sure the car in the wind tunnel is quite a bit faster than the car they have on track."

Stella's skepticism highlights the growing rivalry among top teams. With Mercedes holding back upgrades, McLaren and Ferrari could extend their advantage. Yet, a cautious spending strategy might pay off later in the season.

The 2026 constructors' championship battle is heating up. Will Mercedes catch up, or will they fall too far behind? The coming races will reveal the answer.
