Internal friction at McLaren flared up once again after Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri collided during the sprint race at the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix. The incident in the closing stages of the 20-lap race brought an unwanted flashback to previous seasons, reminding the team of earlier internal clashes that prompted strict internal guidelines.
Even though the clash was fought over a mere fourth place in a sprint race with minimal points at stake, the consequences were deeply felt by the squad. Team principal Andrea Stella emphasized that this contact between teammates was simply unacceptable, particularly amid a tight constructors' battle against close rivals.
The clumsy collision not only caused material damage impacting the cost cap budget, but it also piled extra workload onto the mechanics during a busy sprint weekend. Stella stated that this material loss presents a genuine problem for the team's ambitions to secure their target position in the championship standings.

"It is serious because the damage for the team is material. We are in a close fight in the championship. We had the ambition to challenge Ferrari and we have an ambition to finish ahead of Red Bull, and this is a problem to finish ahead," Stella explained regarding the fallout from the crash.
This situation forces the team management to reopen deep internal discussions regarding fair racing boundaries on the track. Stella expressed disappointment that the issue resurfaced despite extensive previous evaluations and mutual commitments built to protect the team's interests above all else.
