Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has called for calm ahead of the 2026 season opener after a pre-season dominated by criticism and scepticism surrounding the new technical regulations.

The introduction of the latest-generation cars during testing in Barcelona and Bahrain triggered strong reactions from several drivers, most notably four-time world champion Max Verstappen. A central concern has been the increased level of energy management required, both over a full grand prix distance and during qualifying laps.

Drivers have highlighted the shift away from flat-out, single-lap execution toward a more strategic deployment of electrical energy. Verstappen described the new concept as “anti-racing,” reflecting broader unease within the paddock about how the cars must now be driven.

Defending the direction of the championship, Domenicali stressed that regulatory change inevitably brings a period of adjustment and collective refinement.

“There is an incredible and constructive approach by everyone to try to do what is right with this new technical opportunity,” Domenicali said.

“As always, when there is something new, everybody asks what is happening. But we need to stay calm and work constructively with the drivers and the teams to ensure the FIA receives the right input if improvements are needed.”

Domenicali confirmed he has met with all 22 drivers on the grid to discuss the concerns raised. According to him, despite differences in opinion, there is a shared willingness to engage constructively with the governing body and technical departments.

“When you do something different, it will feel different. But there is a strong desire to be constructive, and they are already providing feedback to the FIA and their teams,” he added.

He emphasised that Formula 1 has historically evolved through adaptation and innovation, and that the new era presents a different kind of competitive challenge.

“This is the new way. There will be a new challenge, and the best will still be the best,” Domenicali stated.

The Italian executive expressed confidence that current criticism will diminish as teams and drivers refine their understanding of the new machinery throughout the season.

“I am pretty confident that by the end of the year, no one will remember what we are discussing today. That is the nature of Formula 1,” he concluded.

With the 2026 campaign set to begin, attention now shifts to how effectively teams interpret the revised regulations and whether the competitive balance will validate the governing body’s strategic direction.
