F1, Sportrik Media - Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has expressed full confidence that Max Verstappen will remain part of the championship’s long-term future, despite the Dutchman’s outspoken criticism of the 2026 regulations. Domenicali described his recent meeting with the four-time world champion as “very constructive”.

Verstappen has openly criticised the direction of the new technical framework, referring to the cars as “Formula E on steroids”, “not Formula 1”, and “anti-racing”. His comments came amid sweeping regulatory changes centred on increased electrification and revised aerodynamic philosophy. Although several drivers have voiced similar concerns, none have been as direct as the Red Bull driver.

Speaking during a media briefing, Domenicali rejected suggestions of crisis or instability, emphasising that strong reactions are common during major regulatory transitions.

“We’ve met with all the drivers,” Domenicali said.

“As you know, he is incredible. He has a way of saying something that can sometimes be interpreted in a certain way, but I guarantee to you that Max cares about Formula 1 more than anyone else.”

Domenicali confirmed that Verstappen will also engage in discussions with the FIA to formally outline his concerns regarding driving style and technical direction. According to the F1 CEO, open dialogue is essential to ensure that innovation does not compromise the core competitive identity of the sport.

“We had a very constructive meeting, and he will have a very constructive meeting also with the Federation to highlight his point of view and what he believes needs to be done to keep the driving style at the centre without changing the overall approach,” Domenicali added.

He further noted that every significant regulatory overhaul in Formula 1 history has initially drawn scepticism from drivers and engineers alike.

“We shouldn’t forget that the evolution of technology requires a different way of driving. That has happened in the past and will happen again in the future. The comments from the first day are very different from those on the third or fourth day of driving. This will evolve.”

Domenicali also referenced previous transitions, including the 2021 regulation changes, when early predictions suggested dramatic performance deficits that ultimately did not materialise once development matured.

“My style is always to be prudent and to solve things internally. We don’t need to amplify matters that are not in the interests of the fans. I can guarantee that everyone has been very constructive.”

When asked why he was so certain about Verstappen’s continued commitment to the sport, Domenicali cited his longstanding relationship with the Dutch driver.

“Because I have a very good relationship with Max. I know him very well. I spend a lot of time with him. That’s the reason. Full stop. He loves Formula 1 — there’s no doubt about it.”

As the 2026 regulations enter full implementation, maintaining alignment between the championship’s commercial leadership, the governing body, and its leading drivers will be crucial. Domenicali’s remarks underline that, despite public criticism, internal dialogue remains active as Formula 1 navigates its latest technological shift.
