Kimi Antonelli has confirmed he will take a grid penalty at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, despite it being his home race. The decision is aimed at preserving his chances in the Formula 1 world championship fight this season.
The Mercedes driver revealed that both he and teammate George Russell are on the verge of a penalty for exceeding the season's power unit component allocation. Antonelli has chosen Monza as the most suitable circuit to serve the punishment.
“We'll do it in Monza,” Antonelli said, as quoted by La Gazzetta dello Sport. “It's one of the easiest tracks to overtake.”

This decision is a significant blow to Antonelli's hopes of winning in front of his home crowd. However, he stressed that his main priority is to protect his 50-point lead in the drivers' standings.
“It's also true that it's my home race, but right now I'm thinking more about the championship,” he said. “Since we'll inevitably have to take a penalty at some point in the season, I need to evaluate where I can give myself the best chance of making up positions and getting a result.”
The Italian Grand Prix will follow the Dutch Grand Prix this weekend, which marks the return after the summer break. Antonelli remains optimistic about recovering at Monza and delivering a strong performance in front of the fans.
