Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Sergio Perez has warned that the Cadillac F1 Team must prepare for a significantly more demanding weekend at the 2026 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, following a major shift in car configuration.

The American outfit enters its debut Formula 1 campaign having shown steady progress across the opening rounds in Australia and China. However, Suzuka presents a distinct technical challenge, as teams are required to run higher downforce packages compared to previous races—an area Cadillac has yet to explore in competitive conditions. This transition is expected to test the team’s aerodynamic understanding, particularly through Suzuka’s high-speed directional changes.

At the Chinese Grand Prix, Perez and teammate Valtteri Bottas secured Cadillac’s first two-car finish of the season. The result underlined operational stability and reliability, key benchmarks for a new entrant building its performance baseline. It also indicated early competence in race execution, including tyre management and consistency across race distance.

Suzuka’s layout introduces additional complexity, with high downforce requirements directly influencing car balance, tyre degradation, and cornering stability. For a team still in its developmental phase, this creates a new layer of variables that must be managed effectively through clean practice sessions and structured data collection.

"The team has been pushing hard over the first two races of the season, and we have already made clear progress," said Perez.

"The Sprint weekend in China was another new challenge, but we handled it well and came away stronger. I’m excited to continue pushing at Suzuka, a real drivers’ circuit and one where I’ve had podiums before."

"While the higher downforce configuration will make it a more difficult weekend for us, we’ll approach it in the same way—focus on having trouble-free sessions, progress each time we hit the track and get to the end of the race."

Perez’s prior success at Suzuka, including a podium finish during his time with Oracle Red Bull Racing in 2024, provides valuable reference points for Cadillac’s preparation. His circuit knowledge is expected to support setup direction and strategic decision-making in adapting to the track’s demanding characteristics.

With early-season momentum established, Suzuka now represents a critical phase in Cadillac’s development trajectory. The weekend will serve as a key indicator of the team’s ability to adapt to more complex aerodynamic demands, setting the tone for the upcoming rounds in the 2026 Formula 1 calendar.
