Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team has weighed in on the intense intra-team battle between Scuderia Ferrari drivers Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc as part of a broader set of key developments following the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix.
Russell, who finished second in Shanghai, described the Ferrari duel as one of the most aggressive contests he has seen in recent times. Untelevised team radio footage further revealed that he believed Leclerc had effectively backed up Hamilton during the battle, impacting the race flow for cars behind.
“I was just waiting for the two of them to collide, and somehow they didn’t,” Russell said, as reported by PlanetF1.

“It was some of the most aggressive racing I’ve seen for a while.”
Attention also turned to Oracle Red Bull Racing, where untelevised radio messages captured race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase reminding Max Verstappen, “I’m supposed to be on your side,” highlighting internal tension during a difficult race.
Verstappen’s 2026 campaign has begun under challenging circumstances, with the four-time world champion retiring in China due to an ERS cooling issue. The result adds to a frustrating start and reinforces his vocal criticism of the new technical regulations.
He has warned that Formula 1 risks damaging itself if regulatory direction prioritises audience engagement over racing fundamentals.
“It will come back and bite them,” Verstappen stated.
“If this continues, it’s not good for the sport.”
Ferrari also featured prominently in the weekend’s technical narrative, having elected to delay the race debut of its innovative rotating rear wing, often referred to as the ‘Macarena Wing’. The component was trialled in Free Practice 1 but subsequently removed due to concerns over readiness for competitive use.
Hamilton confirmed that the introduction of the system had been accelerated beyond its intended timeline.
“It was probably a bit premature to bring it here,” Hamilton said.
“The car still felt good without it, so we’ll bring it back when it’s ready.”
Meanwhile, Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team continues to face significant technical challenges linked to its Honda power unit. Severe vibration issues have emerged as a major concern, directly affecting driver performance and comfort.
Fernando Alonso revealed that he was losing sensation in his hands and feet before retiring from the race, underlining the severity of the issue. Team principal Adrian Newey has previously warned that prolonged exposure could risk long-term nerve damage if not addressed.
With multiple storylines unfolding—from intra-team battles and technical innovation to reliability concerns—the Chinese Grand Prix has highlighted the complexity of the early 2026 season. Focus now shifts to the next round, where teams will aim to stabilise performance and address key issues that could define the direction of the championship.
