George Russell emerged fastest in second practice for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, edging out Charles Leclerc in a tight battle between Mercedes and Ferrari.
Russell's lap of 1m22.559s, set midway through the session, put him ahead of Charles Leclerc and his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli, who rounded out the top three.
The session initially languished on hard tyres but came alive after 20 minutes when frontrunners switched to Pirelli's soft compound. Antonelli briefly led with 1m22.700s, but Russell responded with 1m22.686s. Leclerc then moved ahead with 1m22.679s, only for Russell to reclaim the top spot with a 1m22.559s that remained unbeaten.
From then on, teams focused on race simulations, leaving the order unchanged. Lando Norris, winner of the last two grands prix, finished fourth, four-tenths down, while Lewis Hamilton was fifth in the second Ferrari, just ahead of Oscar Piastri.
Max Verstappen, missing FP1 for a mandatory rookie session with Ayumu Iwasa, spent FP2 battling balance issues on his Red Bull. He could only manage ninth, with Yuki Tsunoda, standing in for Liam Lawson at Racing Bulls, rounding out the top ten.
Notable incidents included a spin for Leclerc at the second chicane, and a dangerous impeding case involving Lance Stroll, who cut across Norris's path coming out of the pits. The stewards will investigate after the session.
