The single-seater ambitions of Colton Herta hang in the balance following a challenging European campaign that fell well below expectations. After spending seven years competing in the IndyCar Series—highlighted by a third-place overall finish in 2020 and runner-up honors in 2024 alongside nine career victories—the American racer opted for a fresh challenge overseas.

His primary objective in switching to the Formula 2 championship was accumulating the necessary superlicense points required to secure a coveted seat in the pinnacle of motorsport. However, his championship bid completely derailed, leaving the California native languishing in a disappointing 19th position in the overall standings with only two rounds remaining in the season.

This drastic slump in form dealt a major blow to Dan Towriss, CEO of Cadillac F1, who had publicly stated his expectation for Herta to finish inside the top ten of the standings. The heavy price of his European venture included sacrificing a planned entry into the iconic Indianapolis 500, as overlapping calendar commitments forced him to skip the historic American oval race.

“Clearly, I would never turn down a chance to race in the Indy 500,” Herta told Motorsport.com when asked about his prospects of returning to the famous brickyard next season.

“I always want to compete in that race, and it is very unfortunate that it wasn't possible this year because everything was already prepared. But the adjusted Formula 2 calendar turned everything upside down. It should have happened, but unfortunately, things turned out differently,” he sighed.

Despite his aspirations in the F1 paddock taking a significant hit, Herta continues to contribute behind the scenes as a test and development driver for the Cadillac F1 outfit. He has already completed three FP1 outings this year, with a fourth appearance slated before the conclusion of the season alongside various sportscar endurance appearances.
