Roope Korhonen delivered a stunning performance to seize the lead of the European Rally Championship event in Portugal on Sunday morning. The Finnish driver started the morning loop sitting in second place, trailing his main rival by over ten seconds, but overnight setup improvements unlocked a massive surge in pace across the gravel stages.
Mastering the demanding terrain, the Toyota driver was fastest across all four stages of the morning loop. Four consecutive stage victories propelled him straight into the overall lead, establishing a hard-fought advantage of 8.2 seconds at the top of the standings.
"This wasn’t my favourite stage, but it is of course a very legendary one. Everyone knows it well. I just tried to put together a clean, good run," he commented at the end of the final stage of the demanding morning loop.

The shifting of positions at the front was also aided by unexpected mechanical misfortune hitting the overnight leader. Martins Sesks suffered a costly damper problem on the final stage of the loop, which heavily contributed to the rapid loss of time and allowed his closest competitor to capitalize.
"We’re lucky that we can go to service now. Of course, we still have some way to go to get there," the Latvian competitor admitted regarding the suspension troubles that derailed his momentum.
Further down the order, France’s Pablo Sarrazin comfortably holds third position despite sitting more than 40 seconds off the lead. He now enjoys enough breathing room to manage his pace ahead of Spain’s Jan Solans.
"We’re lacking traction and lateral grip. We’re also having problems with the steering, so the car is difficult to predict. But we have a big gap behind, so we just need to reach the finish," Sarrazin explained concerning his handling limitations.
Rounding out the competitive top order, Romania’s Simone Tempestini holds fifth place ahead of Arthur Pelamourgues and home favorite Armindo Araujo. With four grueling stages remaining, the battle for glory in Portugal remains wide open.
