Lewis Hamilton has shouldered the absolute responsibility for missing out on a crucial podium finish at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix after an ill-fated tactical gamble at the Marina Bay Circuit dropped him down to sixth place. The dramatic night race proved to be a harsh reality check for the seven-time world champion representing the Ferrari squad.
The pivotal moment of the race unfolded on lap 39 when race control deployed a Virtual Safety Car following a suspected clutch failure on Lance Stroll's Aston Martin. At that precise juncture, Hamilton had already completed 21 laps on soft tyres, while his teammate was reaping the rewards of a fresher medium tyre stint to execute a cheap and effective second pit stop.
The red cars were running strongly in second and third positions and could easily have executed a flawless double-stack procedure given the 4.4-second gap between them around Turns 10 and 11 when the VSC was enforced. However, it was Hamilton himself who overruled a standard pit strategy to stay out on track for an exhaustive 44-lap stint on the soft compound.

That gamble backfired spectacularly as his tyre degradation worsened, causing him to collapse to sixth position at the checkered flag, even ceding ground to drivers such as Oscar Piastri. Hamilton ultimately finished nearly 46 seconds behind his teammate, highlighting the massive time loss incurred by staying out on worn rubber.
"Sorry, boys," Hamilton said over the team radio after the race. "I let you down today with that strategy. My call, and I lost us valuable points. I’ll try and make up for it in the next one. Great job with the pitstop though." Racing engineer Carlo Santi replied swiftly, "Understood, thank you Lewis," as the championship battle tightened with his advantage over Max Verstappen shrinking to just eight points.
