Red Bull Racing has admitted the RB22 suffered from a major technical issue that significantly limited the team’s competitiveness during the opening phase of the 2026 Formula 1 season. Technical director Pierre Waché even apologised for the delay in solving the problem before the Miami Grand Prix.
The RB22 struggled to compete consistently at the front during the opening three rounds of the campaign. However, the situation improved noticeably in Miami when Max Verstappen immediately reported a much better feeling behind the wheel before qualifying on the front row.
As part of its major Miami upgrade package, Red Bull completely revised the steering rack after identifying it as the core source of the handling limitations experienced throughout the early season.

“First, we had to make sure there really was an issue.”
“Then we had to identify where it was coming from, and that process took a long time.”
From a technical perspective, the steering rack plays a critical role in steering response, front-end stability, and the driver’s connection with the front tyres. When the system fails to operate optimally, drivers can lose precision on corner entry and stability during rapid direction changes.
Waché revealed Red Bull had already recognised signs of the issue before the April break. However, developing an effective solution and manufacturing the revised parts required more time than initially expected.
“I’m sorry we didn’t fix it sooner.”
“We tried several different solutions and none of them worked.”
According to Waché, the five-week gap before Miami proved crucial in allowing the team to manufacture the updated components that ultimately resolved much of the RB22’s weakness. Without the break, the revised package would likely not have been ready for Bahrain or Jeddah.
Red Bull’s improved performance in Miami also highlighted the importance of mechanical platform stability under the current ground-effect regulations. Once drivers regain confidence in the front-end behaviour of the car, aerodynamic efficiency and tyre management can improve significantly.
Although Verstappen showed stronger competitiveness in Miami, Red Bull still faces the challenge of delivering full consistency throughout the season. The Canadian Grand Prix is expected to become an important indicator of whether the RB22 updates are sufficient to return the team to regular contention against rivals such as McLaren, Ferrari, and Mercedes.
