Maximo Quiles asserted his dominance in Moto3 by winning the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday. This victory marked his third consecutive win and extended his championship lead to 131 points after his closest rival, David Almansa, crashed out.
The race was intense from the start. Brian Uriarte surprised with pole position, followed by Almansa and Alvaro Carpe. Quiles, starting fourth, had to work hard to break into the front group. However, his strategy paid off: he quickly passed Uriarte and Carpe, then latched onto Almansa. The two opened a gap of over a second from their pursuers, making it seem like a two-horse race.
Disaster struck when Almansa, leading comfortably, lost control of his bike at Turn 2 and crashed. That left Quiles alone at the front, while Carpe and Uriarte battled for the remaining podium spots. For Almansa, it was a heavy blow: he scored no points and fell further behind in the title hunt.
This win also wrote history for Quiles. With 12 Moto3 victories, he is now the most successful Spanish rider in the class, surpassing Jose Antonio Rueda's record. This achievement cements his status as one of the most promising young talents in racing.
With a 131-point lead, Quiles has a golden opportunity to clinch the world title at Motegi, Japan, in the next round. If he finishes with a certain points gap, the championship will be his. Of course, Almansa and others will not give up easily. They will try to bounce back and delay Quiles' celebration.
The Austrian Moto3 race proved that consistency and calmness are key. Quiles was flawless, while Almansa must learn from his mistake. The battle heading to Motegi is getting more intriguing.
