The World Rally Championship (WRC) off-season has brought a significant shake-up as Jon Armstrong confirms his separation from co-driver Shane Byrne following their maiden full campaign together at the pinnacle of international rallying with M-Sport Ford.
The driver announced the amicable split on social media after taking time to reflect on their achievements over the past two seasons. Both competitors have mutually agreed that stepping away and pursuing different directions is the right move as they prepare for the upcoming 2027 rally season.
"With the dust now settled on the WRC season, and after taking some time to reflect on everything we’ve achieved together, Shane and I have agreed that the time is right for us both to move forward with different plans for the 2027 rally season," Armstrong stated regarding the difficult decision.
The duo initially joined forces back in 2025 during Armstrong’s second European Rally Championship campaign in a Ford Fiesta Rally2. Their journey together featured memorable highlights, most notably taking overall victories at Rali Ceredigion and Rally Croatia, alongside the monumental step up to the Rally1 class in the WRC.
While future plans for Armstrong remain under wraps and a replacement co-driver has yet to be named, expectations point toward another Irish navigator in line with the preferences of the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy. Byrne departs having helped guide Armstrong to impressive milestones, including a stage win in Greece and a seventh-place finish in Sardinia.
