Pablo Nieto Addresses Maverick Vinales-KTM Fallout Before MotoGP 2027

MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Pablo Nieto believes injuries and the absence of strong results caused Maverick Vinales to disappear rapidly from discussions surrounding the 2027 MotoGP rider market, despite his exceptional ability.

Vinales’ premier-class future is uncertain after his relationship with KTM and Tech3 deteriorated. The Spaniard had previously been expected to move into KTM’s factory team for 2027, but a shoulder injury disrupted the beginning of his 2026 season and removed that opportunity.

Vinales remained a candidate to continue with Tech3. However, he claimed he had signed a contract that was damaging to his confidence before KTM ultimately voided the agreement.

In recent weeks, Vinales has publicly criticised KTM and Tech3 over the situation. At the same time, Tech3 has moved closer to securing Luca Marini and a rookie for its 2027 line-up.

Nieto worked with Vinales when the rider won the Moto3 world championship in 2013. He still considers Vinales one of the most talented riders he has ever seen, but believes the unfortunate timing of his injuries caused teams to move on quickly.

“In this sport, people only see what you did in the last race. He is one of the most talented riders I have ever seen, but he has been unlucky with injuries,” Nieto said.

The VR46 team boss argued that riders can lose attention within the paddock almost immediately when they are forced to miss races. A lack of results and discomfort with the team or motorcycle then made Vinales’ position even more difficult.

“When an injury forces you to miss races, people here can forget about you in a day. If the results are not coming and you do not feel comfortable with the team or bike, you can naturally become very frustrated,” he added.

KTM has selected Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio for its factory line-up in 2027. That decision closed one of Vinales’ main routes at a time when almost every other factory seat had already been assigned.

The 2027 rider market developed rapidly while Vinales was still struggling with injury and undergoing surgery after withdrawing from the United States Grand Prix in March. Only the second seat at Honda’s factory squad remains unresolved.

Gresini has finalised its rider line-up, while most remaining satellite positions are already associated with other candidates. That has left Vinales with increasingly limited prospects of remaining in MotoGP.

Vinales has not identified any concrete option outside MotoGP and admitted that he felt mentally exhausted. His situation demonstrates the unforgiving nature of the rider market, where talent and experience can quickly lose value when injuries, timing and results fail to align.
