Factory-backed standout Broc Feeney has voiced major concerns ahead of the Gold Coast 500 as the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts heavy showers across all three days of action. With upwards of 40mm of rain predicted for Friday alone, the treacherous Surfers Paradise Street Circuit is bracing for an even trickier weekend, threatening to upend setups and strategies for the entire Supercars grid.

An additional 20mm of rainfall is forecasted across Saturday and Sunday, forcing teams to prepare for chaotic wet-weather running. Broc Feeney admitted that the outlook is far from ideal, casting serious doubts over whether normal track schedules can even be maintained if the severe weather system delivers its maximum downpour capacity.

"It’s going to be a challenging weekend, that’s for sure. We’ll wait and see what it does. It doesn’t look good," Broc Feeney stated regarding the looming meteorological threat. "My only hope isg I probably shouldn’t be saying thisg but that we can actually be getting all the laps throughout and all the sessions over the weekend, because 40mm of rain normally doesn’t equal cars on track."

The arrival of wild weather could inadvertently overshadow a massive talking point from the lead-up to the event. Footage from last year’s Gold Coast 500 went viral globally as Supercars launched dramatically into the air over the beach chicane, prompting Supercars to announce the controversial reintroduction of tyre bundles to curb the airborne antics.

While intended to solve one major safety hazard, the implementation risks creating entirely new dangers on track. Broc Feeney drew parallels to the dramatic 2022 edition when James Golding slammed heavily into a tyre bundle, scattering debris into the path of Thomas Randle and Will Brown and triggering a massive multi-car pile-up.

"I think we knew that there was a change coming," the Red Bull Ampol-backed driver explained. "We’re probably against tyre bundles just due to the fact that if you hit one it’s pretty bad. The tyre bundle on the right – the one that we were jumping – is fine. The ones on the left, if you make a mistake at the start of the chicane and you can’t bail out and hit a tyre bundle [you’re in trouble]."
