Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Otmar Szafnauer has identified a potential weakness within Mercedes-AMG Petronas despite the team’s dominant start to the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The Brackley-based outfit has won all three grands prix held so far under the new technical regulations, establishing itself as the benchmark across the grid. However, the scale of regulatory change has also created opportunities for rival teams to analyse and replicate successful concepts.
According to Szafnauer, Mercedes’ leading position places it at a strategic disadvantage, as it lacks external reference points for further development while its competitors can study its solutions to accelerate their own progress.

“A significant difference for Mercedes is that everyone else can look at their car and understand what they’ve done to reach that level,” Szafnauer said on the High Performance Podcast.
“Mercedes, on the other hand, can’t look at anyone and say, ‘What do we do next?’”
He explained that Mercedes must rely entirely on internal innovation to maintain its advantage, while other teams can effectively shortcut their development process by learning from the current frontrunner.
“They have to creatively figure out the next step to go faster, whereas the others can look, learn, and catch up more quickly,” he added.
Szafnauer also pointed to the common practice among top engineers of observing rival designs, referencing figures such as Adrian Newey, who is known for analysing cars across the grid to extract ideas and insights.
“That’s what Adrian Newey does—walking around the grid, looking at every car, learning something. It speeds up the whole process,” he said.
Despite this structural challenge, Szafnauer believes Mercedes will continue to improve over time, although the absence of a clear benchmark ahead of them makes their task inherently more complex.
“In 18 months’ time, that Mercedes will be much quicker. But they don’t have anyone ahead to learn from. Others can look and learn—it’s simply a harder job for them,” he concluded.
As the 2026 season develops, the dynamic between innovation and imitation is expected to play a critical role, with Mercedes tasked with sustaining its advantage while rivals work to close the gap through accelerated development.
