Oscar Piastri Blames Late Intermediate Switch for Interlagos Qualifying Setback

A rain-soaked and chaotic qualifying session at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos left Oscar Piastri dealing with a frustrating result. The Australian driver believes his team left it too late to transition onto intermediate tyres as the track conditions evolved during a heavily delayed session.

Throughout Q1, the demanding conditions at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos forced the entire field to rely strictly on full wet tyres. However, as the asphalt began drying out ahead of Q2, the opportunity arose for teams to gamble on a switch to intermediate rubber.

I had just finished a lap, but I think we probably went onto the inters a little bit too late and needed that extra lap or two to really get some temperature in them, Oscar Piastri explained to media members following the conclusion of the session.

Aside from the timing of the pit stop, the young driver admitted that some of his chosen racing lines failed to translate effectively from the wet compound to the intermediate rubber, requiring a thorough post-session data review with his engineering crew.

Asked whether a red flag ruined his final flying lap, he acknowledged that while an extra tour would have helped, the interruption affected everyone on the grid equally. Ultimately, maximizing track position came down to being on the correct rubber at the absolute right moment.

Although Oscar Piastri initially qualified in 12th place, subsequent grid penalties applied to Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton for power unit changes will promote the McLaren charger up to 10th on the starting grid.
