Lando Norris Claims Interlagos Pole in Wet Chaos as George Russell Slams Mercedes

A dramatic and rain-soaked qualifying session at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos saw Lando Norris snatch a stunning pole position after torrential rain delayed the start of the session by over an hour. Treacherous track conditions forced the entire field onto extreme wet tyres initially, before the circuit dried out enough to transition to intermediates by the time Q3 arrived.

Tensions boiled over inside the Mercedes garage as George Russell lashed out over team radio after believing the pit wall robbed him of a chance to secure the ultimate spot. Russell, who had gone fastest on his initial run, was forced to abort his final flying lap after catching Alex Albon and receiving instructions from his team to back off as heavy rain intensified in the pit lane.

"You need to tell me mate what I am doing, if I am backing or going," an agitated Russell shouted over the radio before later yelling in frustration upon learning he finished second behind Norris. "Yeah but... P2. I do not want to be P2, I want to be P1. That was a P1 lap. F****** hell!" Despite his frustration, the grid position is ultimately rendered secondary due to a five-place grid penalty for an engine change.

Capitalizing on the chaotic conditions, Kimi Antonelli took third ahead of Charles Leclerc, while stellar performances from Liam Lawson and Nico Hulkenberg propelled them up the starting order once penalties are factored in. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton suffered an early exit in Q2 alongside rookie drama, while Max Verstappen opted not to run at all to preserve his tyres and car for the main race ahead of a back-of-the-grid start.
