Lando Norris found himself in the spotlight again, but this time it wasn't for his on-track exploits. After the 2026 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix at the new Madring street circuit, the McLaren driver was asked to stop drinking a can of Coca-Cola in the cooldown room. His response? Classic Norris: blunt and a little defiant.
The race itself was a tough one for Norris. Starting from pole, he had to settle for third place after his pit strategy was compromised by a Virtual Safety Car that arrived at the wrong time. The chance for a cheap pit stop vanished, and combined with a relatively slow stop, he had to watch Andrea Kimi Antonelli take the win, with Max Verstappen finishing second.
In the cooldown room, with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, the drivers were clearly drained. Their in-car drinks bottles were likely empty. So it was only natural that Norris wanted to refresh himself with a can of Coke. However, an official approached him and asked him to put the drink away. How did Norris react?
Although the exchange wasn't caught on camera as Norris was sitting between Antonelli and Verstappen, he was heard telling the Italian official that he might get told off. When asked to put the drink away, he pushed back. "I just did a race, so I'm allowed to drink what I would like. Thank you so much," he said, as quoted by Motorsport Week. The video of the interaction quickly spread on social media, ironically only because the official pointed out the can.
The Spanish Grand Prix itself drew widespread criticism from fans and drivers for being uneventful, with only four overtakes throughout the entire race. The new Madring circuit is challenging, but the lack of action had many questioning whether it deserves a place on the calendar. Even George Russell admitted he had a sore head and urged changes to the circuit.
Beyond the minor controversy, the Coca-Cola incident shows Norris's human side. Under the pressure of being reigning world champion, he remains relaxed and unafraid to speak his mind. Perhaps it was also a sign of exhaustion after a tough race where he lost the win due to factors beyond his control.
Regardless, this moment adds to the list of unique paddock stories. From drink debates to circuit criticism, the Spanish weekend provided plenty of talking points. For Norris, the focus now shifts to bouncing back in the next round. But at least he showed that off the track, he's still himself: honest and unfiltered.
