Carrying a famous motorsport surname often brings immense pressure, but Roope Hirvonen is steadily carving out his own identity. The 21-year-old claimed his first Finnish championship title this season by winning the SM3 class, proving that his pace is entirely earned. Stepping out of the shadow of his father Mikko Hirvonen—who secured 15 WRC rally victories during a stellar career—has required immense dedication and resilience.

The younger Hirvonen’s journey into the sport started relatively late, as his father previously told Rallit.fi a few years ago. Initially, carrying such a notable family name created external burdens and high expectations from observers. However, Roope Hirvonen has managed to channel those early hurdles into fuel for his own development on the stages.

Recent months have seen the young driver test his limits beyond domestic borders. He headed to the Citta di Bassano Rally in early October, gaining crucial experience during his very first tarmac rally. Just a week later, he delivered a breakthrough performance at Portugal’s ERC round, dominating the Rally4 class as the fastest driver and finishing an impressive 26th overall.

Reflecting on his current mindset regarding the family name, Roope Hirvonen admitted that the initial weight has lifted significantly. "I don’t think there is that much pressure any more. There was more when I started because people had certain ideas and expectations of me. But I have tried to show that my pace is at a good level. I am trying to follow my own path and find out how far I can go," he told Portuguese publication Autosport.

Even though he is determined to build an independent career, having a former WRC star in his corner remains a massive asset. The vast experience held by Mikko Hirvonen is always accessible whenever his son seeks guidance on handling complex rally scenarios. "I am following my own path, but my father has so much experience that I can always turn to him and ask what I should do or how I should handle something. I get a lot of help from him, but I also do things my own way," he explained.

Racing in Portugal also offered a sentimental journey as he tackled stages previously conquered by his father. Rather than imposing strict instructions, the veteran driver allowed his son to absorb the environment naturally. "We have really enjoyed being able to experience the same rallies. I have seen pictures of my father competing in them, and now I am driving in the same places. It is really great to see that," he noted, adding that his father's pre-event advice was straightforward: "Here, he just told me to enjoy it and watch out for the rocks on the second passes."

Completing the punishing Portuguese ERC event without suffering a single puncture or major technical issue underscored his growing technical prowess. The stark contrast between smooth Finnish stages and abrasive foreign roads has accelerated his learning curve. "I am learning to drive on different road surfaces and in changing conditions. In Finland, the roads never deteriorate as badly, and the stages are much faster. Driving here requires more technical skill. We learnt a lot, and I am really happy about that," he concluded.
