Red Bull Admits RB22 Balance Disconnect Issues During Mexico GP Practice

The Formula 1 race weekend in Mexico City immediately presented a tough challenge for Red Bull Racing. Defending champion Max Verstappen admitted that he had to fight hard to overcome the minimal tire grip at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Friday's free practice sessions did not go entirely smoothly, forcing the engineering team to work overtime to find technical solutions.

The main issue facing the Milton Keynes-based squad lies in the performance of their RB22 car. Technical director Pierre Wache openly revealed a disconnect issue between the front and rear of the car. This symptom is very noticeable when the driver enters the braking phase, reaches the apex, and exits the corners.

This tricky situation was further aggravated by an on-track incident involving Liam Lawson. The collision damaged crucial aerodynamic components on Verstappen's car, causing the team to lose vital downforce. As a result of this incident, the collection of important data during practice was disrupted, compounded by the fact that Verstappen had to give up the first practice session to Ayumu Iwasa.

Commenting on the new technical regulations combined with the characteristics of Mexico's high-altitude circuit, Verstappen noted that his experience behind the wheel was far from enjoyable. The active aerodynamic characteristics under the new regulations make the car slide much more frequently, requiring drivers to be extremely patient in handling the vehicle through corners.

According to Motorsport.com, Pierre Wache emphasized that the team's top priority right now is to fix this mechanical balance issue before the next sessions begin. Red Bull realizes they are still lagging in pure pace compared to their closest rivals like Ferrari, meaning setup changes must yield positive results.
