Norris Admits McLaren Limitations, Claims Sixth Was Maximum Potential

A long and chaotic race weekend at the Sepang circuit left McLaren with plenty to evaluate. Although both drivers managed to finish inside the points scoring positions, the final outcome of the Grand Prix fell short of the high expectations within the Woking-based squad. Amid unpredictable weather conditions following a heavy downpour, Oscar Piastri crossed the finish line in sixth place, while reigning world champion Lando Norris could only salvage a ninth-place finish.

Trouble for the papaya team began right from the start due to a flawed initial strategic gamble. After a violent rainstorm soaked the track, McLaren was the only team to initially opt for medium compound tires, causing them to drop positions immediately as the lights went out. The decision backfired instantly due to a lack of expected grip, forcing the drivers onto the defensive.

Things temporarily looked up when Valtteri Bottas went off track, triggering the first safety car period. Both drivers quickly pitted for intermediate tires, a correct call that helped them claw their way back up the order, especially after subsequently switching to hard compound tires. However, a Virtual Safety Car deployed for Alex Albon's retirement—which later escalated into a full safety car—threw McLaren's plans into disarray.

Unlike the shrewd strategy executed by Ferrari, McLaren chose not to pit immediately for another tire change. According to FormulaPassion, Oscar Piastri described the race as highly eventful and chaotic, noting that they gambled on slick tires at the start before instantly diving into the pits for intermediates. Even though their pace improved significantly on the hard tires during the second stint as he hunted down Charles Leclerc, the charge was cut short by the late safety car.

Furthermore, Oscar Piastri emphasized that the team simply lacked the raw pace to truly make a significant mark. He acknowledged the visible progress made by rivals such as Red Bull Racing over the weekend. While new car components are performing as expected, competitors are also stepping up their game, meaning McLaren is not currently in the fight for victory and must analyze everything before focusing fully on Singapore.

To compound the team's woes, Lando Norris nearly suffered a major disaster behind the safety car following Alex Albon's retirement. The #1 driver was forced into a last-second evasive maneuver to avoid hitting teammate Oscar Piastri, sending him spinning into the gravel trap and dropping him down to ninth position. Reflecting on the tumultuous race, Lando Norris openly admitted that the early medium tire gamble was a collective decision that ultimately proved wrong in hindsight.

“Ultimately, the day boiled down to a few fundamental aspects. The initial gamble to start on medium tires did not pay off: the grip simply wasn't there as we expected; it was a collective decision and, in hindsight, turned out to be wrong. However, we must be honest: we simply weren't fast enough. The car lacks race pace and we need to improve it significantly if we want to be competitive. I don't think we could have aimed for positions better than sixth or seventh, regardless of how the race played out,” Lando Norris stated bluntly regarding McLaren's limitations in Sepang.
