Lando Norris has revealed that his route towards Formula 1 changed after a childhood motorcycle crash led him away from two wheels and into karting.
The McLaren driver began racing motorcycles before he had ever tried a go-kart or any form of four-wheel competition. However, one accident convinced him to stop riding, and he did not return to motorcycles for several years.
“I actually started on bikes. I rode bikes before I ever tried a go-kart or anything on four wheels. Then I had a crash and never did it again,” Norris said.

That decision ultimately redirected Norris towards car racing. The unplanned change took him through karting and the junior categories before he reached Formula 1, where he is now attempting to defend the drivers’ championship he won last season.
Although Norris stopped riding at a young age, his interest in MotoGP remained strong. Much of his neon-yellow branding was inspired by Valentino Rossi, who has long been one of his major sporting influences.
Norris and Rossi later developed a close relationship through several collaborations, including appearances at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. That connection has contributed to Norris considering a return to motorcycle riding after years of focusing exclusively on four-wheel competition.
Norris said he wants to become more involved with motorcycles, although Formula 1 and the pursuit of further world titles remain his priorities. He believes experiences outside grand prix racing still have a place alongside the demands of his professional career.
His story shows how one childhood accident permanently altered his sporting direction. However, his enthusiasm for MotoGP never disappeared and has now resurfaced after he reached the highest level of Formula 1.
