Jorge Martin has reclaimed the top spot in the 2026 MotoGP standings after winning the Austrian Sprint at the Red Bull Ring on Saturday (19/9/2026). The Aprilia Racing rider now leads with 286 points, three ahead of Marc Marquez who sits second on 283.
The sprint was dramatic from the first lap. Martin, starting from pole, ran wide at Turn 1 and was immediately attacked by Marc Marquez. He dropped to eighth, while Pedro Acosta took the lead and began to pull away.
Acosta controlled the race with a gap of over 1.5 seconds to Marquez. But Martin gradually fought back. He passed Francesco Bagnaia, Alex Marquez, Marco Bezzecchi, and Marquez to move into second and began chasing Acosta. At that stage, the gap was still around 2.5 seconds.

Drama struck when Acosta crashed at Turn 2A while leading. The incident ended his victory hopes after a strong early showing. Franco Morbidelli also failed to finish after crashing at Turn 2A-2B.
Martin eventually cruised to victory with a time of 20:57.387. Marc Marquez finished second, 1.026 seconds adrift, while Marco Bezzecchi secured third with a gap of 1.675 seconds. Ai Ogura and Alex Marquez completed the top five, with Francesco Bagnaia sixth.
The result reshuffles the top of the standings. Martin leads with 286 points, followed by Marquez (283), Bezzecchi (248), Fabio Di Giannantonio (223), and Ai Ogura (209). Ogura sits ahead of Acosta, who also has 209 points, while Raul Fernandez is seventh on 199 points.
With just three points separating Martin and Marquez, the battle for the championship is wide open ahead of the main Austrian Grand Prix. The Sprint at the Red Bull Ring proved that positions can change in an instant, especially after Acosta's dramatic crash while leading.
