But Antonelli, born in 2006, has proven far more convincing in adapting to the latest technical regulations. Not only is he quick, but he’s also consistent and calm under pressure.
Juan Pablo Montoya, a former F1 driver known for his sharp opinions, sees another dimension that makes Russell’s situation even trickier. It’s not just about speed on track, but also Antonelli’s personality outside the car. Montoya believes it’s hard for Russell to build a psychological fight against this particular teammate.
“It’s really difficult to get angry with Antonelli and go against him, because he’s such a nice guy,” Montoya told BetBrothers. “If he were a jerk, it would be easier for George Russell to attack him. But he’s just a cheerful, carefree guy. That makes everything harder.”
Montoya’s comments highlight a psychological aspect often overlooked in top-level competition. In an era where rivalries are often built on tension and ego, having a teammate everyone likes can be an invisible but effective weapon. Russell may have to find another way to turn things around, because facing the friendly and talented Antonelli is clearly no easy task.
With seven wins, Antonelli now leads the championship comfortably. Russell, who hasn’t won a race this season, must find answers soon if he wants to keep his hopes alive. But as Montoya says, fighting Antonelli isn’t just about racing technique—it’s also about overcoming a charm that’s hard to beat.
